Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Evaluation of Some Novel Phenazine Derivatives

Lahari Sidde, S. Chand Basha

Abstract

Novel phenazine analogues (PZ1‑PZ6) were synthesized, characterized by the spectral analysis and screened for anti-arthritis activity by bovin serum and egg albumin protein denaturation method. The synthetic route involves the equimolar mixture of ortho-phenylenediamine and ammonium persulphate which were dissolved in 1 M HCl to give 2,3-diaminophenazine(I). Different substituted aromatic aldehydes were added to the 2,3-diaminophenazine(I) and dissolved in methanol. The reaction mixture was stirred for 1‑2 h and then refluxed for 1‑3 h to obtain intermediate compound like N2, N3(disubstitutedbenzylidene) phenazine-2,3-diamine (II). The equimolar concentration of the compound (II), triethylamine, chloracetyl chloride, 1,4-dioxane was taken stirred for 30 min, kept for reflux for 2‑3 h, filtered and recrystallized with ethanol to give six novel phenazine derivatives (PZ1‑PZ6). The compounds show mild to moderate anti-arthritis activity when compared with standard diclofenac.
