Concept of Hypertension (Zaghtuddum qavi) in Unani System of Medicine: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract


The term Zaghtuddum qavi (hypertension) does not exist as such in classical Unani literature but most of clinical features representing hypertension has been mentioned under the heading of Imtala bi hasbil auiya. Literally 'Imtala' means gathering and fullness of the body with madda (fluids). "Technically, it means there is an accumulation of normal or abnormal fluids in the body. Approximately 50% of whites and 60% of blacks have either systolic or diastolic hypertension. The prevalence of hypertension varies considerably among and within population. In general, societies in whom acculturation and industrialization are advanced have a higher prevalence of elevated blood pressure than less developed societies [2]. In western countries, nearly 50 percent of all persons develop hypertension sometime during their span of life and one-fourth of all deaths in the elderly are due to one of the complications of hypertension. For instance, Razi suggests venesection for this particular ailment. One can use mudirrat (diuretics) to reduce body fluids and minerals. Musakkin (Relaxants) and munawwim (sedatives) are also advised by Unani physicians to reduce anxiety. Mental relaxation, dietary control and moderate exercise should also be advised. The aim of this review is to make masses aware of the common ailment and to highlight the basic concepts of prevention and regulation of hypertension in Unani system of medicines.
