Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate the biological properties of methanolic extracts of leaves and seeds from Vitexrivularis. Leaves and seeds extracts were prepared by maceration in methanol. Phytochemicals analysis was performed by colorimetric method, chemical reaction method and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The broth microdilution method was used to evaluate the in vitro activity against three strains of Candida albicans and 17 isolates of two yeast species (Candida sp. and Cryptococcus neoformans). The antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. The major classes of compounds identified by qualitative phytochemical screening were glycosides, alkaloids and phenols, tannins, flavonoids, anthocyanins and triterpenes. The seeds extract had the highest quantity of phenolic compounds whereas the leaves extract was richerin flavonoids. HPLC analysis revealed the presence of catechin and chlorogenic acid in both the extracts. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of methanolic extracts of leaves and seeds from V.rivularis ranged from 3.75 to 15.00 mg/ml. Both the extracts showed scavenging activity with EC50 of 25.31 µg/ml and 45.12 µg/mlfor leaves and seeds extracts, respectively. The results of this study provide an important basis for the use of V. rivularis to control infectious diseases caused by Candida sp. and C.neoformans.
