Abstract

The present work is aimed at the development and characterization of orodispersible tablet using novel natural super disintegrant, a polysaccharide isolated from Cassia tora seeds. Metformin hydrochloride (HCL) tablets were prepared separately using different concentration (2%, 5%, 7.5%) of isolated Cassia tora seed, a natural polysaccharide and croscarmellose sodium (synthetic) as super disintegrant by direct compression method. Evaluation of the tablet was done for various pre and post-compression parameter. Development and characterization of a novel natural super disintegrant of Cassia tora had shown the greater disintegrant property compared to synthetic croscarmellose sodium. The present work revealed that Cassia tora comparatively cheaper with certain desired properties such as abundantly available, nonirritating and nontoxic in nature. They have several advantages over synthetic super disintegrant such as ease of isolation, local availability and biocompatibility as well Cassia tora has shown an anti-diabetic activity.
