Abstract

This research work studied the preventive effect of ethylacetate fractions of Parkinsonia aculeata and Newbouldia laevis using carbon
tetrachloride (CCl 4 ) model to induce toxication in rats. Increased (p<0.05) serum concentrations of enzymes and non-enzymes biochemical
parameters such as lactate dehydrogenase, gamma glutamyl transferase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine and aspartate transaminases and
total bilirubin, were seen in group of rats administered only carbon tetrachloride. However, groups that received 100 to 200mg/kg of the
two ethylacetate fractions of the plants showed a reverse order of the parameters. Vitamins C and D, catalase, glutathione and
superoxide dismutase were found to decrease (P<0.05) but increases (P<0.05) in the levels of lipid peroxides were seen in rats that
received only carbon tetrachloride. Different doses of the combined ethylacetate fractions and silymarin showed a significant increase of
the antioxidants but a decrease of lipid peroxides was observed. The histopathology study of the liver sections of CCl 4 -intoxicated

untreated rats showed massive fatty changes and necrosis, these changes were reversed in the combined extract treated groups.
