Abstract

Citrus fruits are known to have several medicinal properties and are rich sources of vitamin C and antioxidants. In fact, they stand out as the most common and rich source of dietary phenolic compounds that are known to have several health benefits, including anticancer activities. These fruits are popular the world over, and a number of studies have been done to explore their medicinal properties. Studies done to analyze the biochemical and nutritional value of this group of fruits have shown over the years that citrus peels are an inexpensive and very good source of high-content natural bioactive compounds. Very good antioxidant activities are also found in these plant extracts. The present review summarizes the studies done on citrus fruits like oranges, mousambi, and tangerines to explore their biochemical and medical properties.
