Clinical pharmacy has its origins in hospital pharmacy, but in some countries, clinical activities which were restricted to hospitals in the beginning, are now well developed within the community setting. Clinical pharmacy practice in the hospital and community settings, as seen in other countries, can improve the drug use process by promoting the quality and safe use of medicines. India is a country with many drug use problems, as a result there are complex socio-economic, medical and political factors which involve prescribers, patients, pharmacists, nurses, the pharmaceutical industry and therefore the government. Clinical pharmacy has emerged as one of the latest and unmapped disciplines of pharmacy in the 21st century. The existence of clinical pharmacists in medical rounds could support physicians in optimizing pharmacotherapy. This novel profession in India extends its diversions to good manufacturing practices (GMP), procurement, preparation, distribution of medication, reporting ADRs/ADEs and on the entire to a very promising aspect of patient healthcare service. The clinical pharmacy branch is surely attaining new heights in regard to patient care services which have certainly increased the services and satisfaction to the patients. On the whole, Clinical pharmacy is a rewarding career path with opportunities to contribute to improved medication use through employment in hospitals, teaching, drug information, pharmacovigilance, clinical research and medical information.
