Studies on Extraction and Purification of Total Phenolic Content from Methanolic Extract of Syzygium Cumini Seeds
Keywords:
Syzygium cumini, Phenolic Content, Extraction, Methanol, Silica gel.Abstract
Syzygium cumini is commonly known as Jamun fruit and belongs to Myrtaceae family. It contains various nutritional values like sugars, vitamins, lipids, carbohydrate content, organic acids, minerals. Mainly this seed contains various phytochemicals like phenolic compounds (gallic, ferulic, caffeic), flavonoids (quercetin, rutin, kaempferol), carotenoids (β-carotene, γ-carotene, lycopene) and other compounds are present. This seed also shows pharmacological properties like antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, enzyme inhibitory and tonic effects etc. In this experiment, methanol is the best solvent for the extraction of TPC from seeds of Syzygium cumini. It shows 19µg/ml concentration. Then methanolic plant extract was poured in to column chromatography for purification of TPC. Here it was enhanced and its concentration was 21.0µg/ml. Here silica gel is adsorbed impurities in plant extract and TPC concentration was enhanced.
