Abstract

Iron is a crucial element that holds significance in various essential biological functions. These include the synthesis of heme, which constitutes the core component of hemoglobin, the protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the bloodstream. Additionally, iron is involved in the production of myoglobin, energy metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis, collagen formation, and the functioning of the immune system. There are mainly two reasons for iron imbalance: Iron deficiency and Iron overload. In 2022, WHO implemented a program titled "Preventing and controlling iron deficiency anaemia through primary health care: a guide for health administrators and program managers" to further assist in preventing and controlling iron deficiency anaemia. For ferrous bisglycinate treated with citric acid, the FAO specification from 2003 mentions an assay technique by redox titration utilising Orthophenanthroline as an indicator and 0.1 N cerric sulphate as a titrant. This review focused on causes of iron imbalance mainly occurred through iron deficiency and iron overload. Also focused on the chemistry of ferrous bisglycinate which include synthesis, mechanism and method for estimation of total iron content by three different techniques (Titration, colorimetry, RP-HPLC). Manufacturing companies with their varying prices, comparison of ferrous bisglycinate with other salt forms, application in various industries, merits and demerits of ferrous bisglycinate has also been focused in this review.
