The Therapeutic Repertoire of Turmeric

Jawahar R Nidamboor

Abstract

ABSTRACT

Turmeric has been used in the treatment of arthritis, and other inflammatory conditions, for ages. Its healing constituent, curcumin, has been found to curb the incendiary activity of the COX-2 and lipooxygenase, the two enzymes involved in elevating and sustaining inflammation. It is also suggested that curcumin has a protective effect on the liver, thanks to its anti-tumour resolve, aside from its ability to easing inflammation and combating infections. This is, of course, just a part of its therapeutic ‘ammo.’ Turmeric has more to it than what meets its curative repertoire — not only in terms of its remedial profile, but also in preventative treatment.

Keywords: turmeric, curcumin, inflammation, osteoarthritis, coxib-2 inhibitors, asthma, atherosclerosis, liver disorders, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-venom, clinical studies
