Isolation, Phytochemical Investigation and Biological Screening of Roots of Cosmos Sulphureus

Lata Khani Bisht

Abstract

Aims and objectives: The plants are integral part of traditional system of medicine. Cosmos is one such medicinal plant traditionally being used in Brazil and Mexico for treatment of several diseases.

The present study is aimed to evaluate the properties of Cosmos sulphureus and its preliminary phytochemical screening, extraction, purification and identification of active components.

Materials and Methods:

All roots were handpicked and washed with tap water. Cleaned roots were air dried under shade for 2 to 3 weeks, powdered and subjected to extraction with petroleum ether and methanol. Phytochemical screening was carried out to find the constituents followed by antioxidant activity using DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method.

Result and conclusion:

IC50 values for antioxidant potential of petroleum ether and methanol root extracts were found to be 145.5 µg/ml and 75.7 µg/ml respectively. The present work revealed that root part of acetone extract possesses maximum percentage of antioxidant activity. This observation revealed that extracts exhibited great potential antioxidant property. Thus it can be consider as very useful plant to treat and control several diseases.
