Abstract

Plants of Madhuca indica J. F. Gmel., popularly known as “Mahua” is an Indian tropical tree found in abundance in plains and forests of Jharkhand state. Recently, various development and anthropogenic activities have resulted in depletion of forest area on one hand and migration of forest dwellers, mostly tribals, to urban area on the other in search of job. If this continues unabated there are all possibilities of losing valuable information lying with regard to cure of many diseases through herbal treatment, including Mahua. In the present study leaves of Mahua plant was screened for certain secondary metabolites through tannins, phlobatanins, saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids and cardiac glycosides. Presence of all these recorded. Quantification of all these metabolites revealed that the leaves of Mahua are good source of flavonoid, saponin and tannin showing their presence as 1.5%, 3.5% and 20.5% in the dried grounded powder.
