Managing Chronic Kidney Disease using Plant Based Therapies indepth review

Miyanda Petty M

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a debilitating condition with a constantly increasing incidence associated with global financial and social burden on health care systems. The last stage of CKD is kidney failure which if left untreated with kidney replacement therapies is significantly life threatening. Modern treatment schedules of CKD focus on delaying the disease progression by using angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers and calcium channel blockers. The three well documented mechanisms associated with CKD pathogenesis include inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. A number of traditional plant extracts have shown an exponential increase in improving chronic kidney disease treatment outcome with the main modes of action being antioxidant with subsequent improvement on inflammation and fibrosis. Preclinical research has demonstrated some outstanding therapeutic outcomes using plant-based therapies from In vitro and in vivo experiments. The use of combination therapy in CKD involving plant extracts with conventional medicines have proved to be relatively successful as they may possess additive and synergistic reno protective effects. This article aims to review alternative plant-based therapies that have been studied both in the preclinical and clinical stages that are potentially effective in treating and preventing CKD with optimal treatment outcomes and minimal toxic effects.
