Abstract

Hair dyes are one of the fastest-growing cosmetic and personal care products. Both men and women change their hair colour to look younger and more beautiful and to keep up with fashion trends. Regardless of their economic and educational background, people colour their hair to highlight the importance of appearance. Despite the side effects, most people continue to dye their hair for cosmetic reasons. Natural dyes are more environmentally friendly, recyclable, non-toxic, and less susceptible to allergens than artificial dyes. The term "natural dye" is typically used to encompass dyes obtained from plant, animal, or mineral sources; however, it may also encompass dyes derived from insect sources, including cococeal, kerm, and lac. Numerous plant, animal, microbial, and mineral sources have been discovered for the purpose of extracting colouring compounds, resulting in the extraction of a variety of reds, yellows, browns, blues, blacks, greens, and oranges. In this paper, we reviewed various aspects of natural ingredients used in hair dyes and textile industries with their characters, applications, challenges, and innovations. The more research and development on natural ingredients could eventually replace synthetic ingredients in dye industries. Overall, the use of natural ingredients in hair dyes and textile industries is a promising area of research.
