Purendra Singh, Teena Agrawal

Abstract

Albizialebbeck (L.) Benth. is well known as the medicinal plant in the Ayuerveda, Siddha and Unani system of medicines. The drug isolated from different parts of this plant is used in different sciences of medicines like Unani, Ayuerveda, allopathic, Sidda, naturopathic and homeopathic. The present investigation deals with pharmacognostical and primary phytochemical screening of the pod of Albbizzialebbeck (L.) Benth. The pharmacognostical studies include fluorescence, organoleptic evaluation and physicochemical analysis. The water, hydro-ethanolic, ethyl acetate, methanol, hexane, benzene and chloroform extracts are subjected to organoleptic evaluation, and phytochemical screening. The physicochemical constants obtained were found to be within normal levels prescribed by phytochemical standard. The phytochemical investigation of pod of Albizialebbeck(L.) Benth. revealed the presence of metabolites like saponins, steroids, alkaloids, terpenoides, cardiac glycosides, glycosides, anthranol glycosides, carbohydrates, protein and amino acid. The study will provide referential information for identification of the crude drug and the results are helpful for the isolation of medicinally important active components.
