Abstract


Background: In clinical practice, we often come across people using turmeric for sprains, ginger for cough, garlic for hypertension, curry leaf for memory enhancement, mint leaves for spasmodic abdominal pain and honey for its nutritional value. Aim: This review article aims to study roots, leaves and honey to prove that benefits of these home remedies are not mere myths but there exists scientific proof stating their beneficial health effects. Materials: Extensive literature search was done, and clinical trials and animal studies were analysed to study the health effects of roots like turmeric, ginger and garlic; leaves including ‘tulsi’, curry leaf and mint and honey. Conclusion: Use of roots, leaves and honey in treatment of multiple chronic ailments are not myths but have been scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-atherogenic, antidiabetic, anticancer, memory enhancing and wound properties.
