A Descriptive Study to Assess the Knowledge of Tobacco Chewing among Adolescent of Age (12–18 Years) in Selected Schools of Panchkula, Haryana

Adolescence is a period of life with specific health and developmental needs and rights. Tobacco addiction in large number of adults has been initiated during the adolescence period. There has been a rapid increase in trade and use of smokeless tobacco products in recent years in the country, which is a matter of serious concern to the health planners. It is important to understand various factors that influence and encourage young teenagers to start use tobacco products, Adolescents are easily influenced by television, cinema, and advertisement and also by their peer. Adolescent are the age of experimentation, adventure and exploration, also known to be vulnerable to variety of changing behavior such as addicted to substance abuse, premarital sexual activity and antisocial behavior. Now a day the habit of consuming tobacco use is spreading like infection communicable diseases among the adolescents. The main objectives of the study is to assess the knowledge of tobacco chewing among adolescent in selected schools of Panchkula, Haryana, to determine the association between knowledge of adolescent with their selected socio-demographic variables. The research design adopted for the study was descriptive design. A non-experimental approach was adopted for the present study. Convenient sampling technique was used to select the 50 samples of adolescents (12–18 years). The tool used for the study was self-administered knowledge questionnaire. The data analysis was done by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that maximum number42% of subjects had inadequate knowledge regarding tobacco chewing where as 34% had moderate knowledge regarding tobacco chewing and 24% subjects had adequate knowledge.
