Formulation and Evaluation of Herbal Hand Sanitizer against Some Common Microorganisms

Abstract


Herbal medicines are the significant part of healthcare throughout the world. Herbal medicines have been utilized as effectual remedies for the prevention and management of multiple health conditions. Hand washing can stop the chain of transmission of deadly microorganisms from the hand to other parts of the body. Hand hygiene is a vital principle and exercise in the prevention and reduction of healthcare-acquired infections. Hand sanitization is the best aid to prevent infections caused by different types of microorganisms. In the present experiment, herbal hand sanitizer was prepared by using various leaves extracts. The leaves of Coriandrum sativum (Coriander), Azadirachta indica (Neem), Ocimum sanctum (Tulsi), Syzygium aromaticum (Clove), Cymbopogon citratus (Lemon grass) and Cinnamomum zeylanicum (Cinnamon) was used. It is sure that combination of these ingredients act as an effective hand sanitizer. The microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were mainly used to test the efficacy of the product. The study revealed that the herbal hand sanitizer was very much efficient in reducing microorganisms from the hand. The formulation of hand sanitizer was prepared and evaluated for physical properties such as colour, odour and pH etc.
