Deepika Varvade, Ashwani Mishra

Abstract

The aim of this work is to develop best Emulgel formulation carrying Antifungal agent Ofloxacin Emulgel has been emerged as a promising drug delivery system. Formulation of Ofloxacin Emulgel was done by using Carbopol 934 as a gelling agent, liquid paraffin as hydrophobic phase, Tween-80 and span-80 as emulsifiers and surfactant. Ofloxacin has been used in pharmaceutical formulation since it has antimicrobial activity. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase that prevent the supercoiling of DNA during replication and transcription by inhibits their function. It inhibits normal cell division. Final formulation was formulated in two steps, first emulsion was prepared and then it was incorporated in the gel base. The prepared formulations were evaluated for rheological studies, spreading coefficient studies, bio-adhesive strength, skin irritation studies, in vitro release, average globule size, in vivo release studies. It was concluded that Ofloxacin Emulgel formulation batch F4 prepared by using Carbopol 934 as gelling agent was the best prepared formulation among all the prepared batches. It can also be concluded that Emulgel is a wonderful drug delivery system to deliver the drug.
