A Review of Medicinal Plants against Drug-Induced Nephrotoxicity

Divya Bisht, Deena Prakash, Arvind Kumar Shakya

Abstract

Kidney is an excretory organ as it regulates chemical balance and releases waste products from the human body. It is primarily associated with filtration of blood, maintaining level of hormones (mainly vitamin D and erythropoietin) to regulate blood pressure, mineral balance and production of red blood cells. The kidney is more susceptible to drug induced toxicity due to the constant exposure to drug and chemicals present in blood. Over-consumption of drugs can cause acute and chronic kidney diseases, nephrotic syndrome, cardio-renal syndrome leading to advanced cirrhosis and kidney failure in extreme cases. Medicinal plants have been used traditionally for the treatment of kidney ailments and are considered to have nephroprotective properties. They can serve as potential alternative for the treatment of kidney diseases. This review has compiled the information on nephroprotective medicinal plants which have been experimentally evaluated for the treatment of kidney disease against drug-induced nephrotoxicity.
