Hepatoprotective Role of Exogenous Melatonin and Insulin Plant (Costus IgneousNak.) Extract against the Streptozotocin Induced Diabetes in Rats
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to compare hepatoprotective efficacy of exogenous melatonin and insulin plant extract against streptozotocin induced hepatic complications. To induce diabetes adult female rat were administrated with STZ (15mg/kg) for consecutive six days. The confirmation of diabetic model was analyzed by blood glucose test. Following confirmation diabetic rat model were treated with exogenous MEL intraperitoneally and plant extract was administered orally. Administration of MEL and plant extract to STZ induced diabetic rat showed a significant decrease of lipid peroxidation (TBARS) in liver tissue comparable to the control group of rats. In addition, plant extract and melatonin prevented the decrease in anti-oxidative enzyme parameters viz. superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) of hepatic tissues. Both the melatonin and plant extract showed significant recovery however, plant extract showed significantly higher protection to restore the hepatic alteration in comparison to melatonin administered group of female rats. The histological observations showed damages by STZ in hepatic lobules as the therapeutic potential of melatonin and plant extract of Costus igneous managed to recover the condition by its potential anti-oxidative property. Therefore, it might be suggested that insulin plant extract might be used to protect the liver during diabetes.
