Development and Characterization of Ondansetron containing Chewing Gum Formulations for Preventing Vomiting and Motion Sickness

Chewing gums are portable drug delivery devices that can deliver medications via the buccal route for either local or systemic absorption. Without water, it can be administered discretely. Antiemetic medication is combined with the gum base in medicated chewing gums, which are chewed rather than ingested. These formulations contain Ondansetron, Polyvinyl alcohol, Carboxymethyl agorase, Peppermint oil, Polyethylene glycol (PEG-400), Calcium carbonate, Synthetic gum base, Propyl paraben, and Ascorbic acid. The Traditional method technique was used to make the medicated chewing gums. The produced medicated chewing gums underwent different pre- and post-compression parameter evaluations. Formulation F7's in-vitro drug release tests at various chewing conditions showed satisfactory drug release within 30 minutes. The study's findings support the notion that chewing gum containing ondansetran HCl may serve as a dosage form for the management of chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting.
