Abstract

Present study was designed to evaluate the nephroprotective effect of exogenous melatonin and insulin plant extract against diabetic induced renal alterations. Diabetic rat model was developed by intraperitoneal treatment of STZ to adult female rat (15 mg/kg) for continuous 6 days. Diabetes was confirmed by checking the blood glucose level. Following confirmation and successful induction, rats were randomly divided into six different groups group viz. group-I (control), group-II (Diabetic control), group-III (STZ+MEL), group-IV (MEL), group-V (STZ+PE) and group-VI (PE alone). Diabetic rats revealed significant increment in lipid peroxidation while as decrease in total protein content and antioxidative enzymatic activities. Administration of MEL and plant extract to STZ induced diabetic rats showed significant restoration in lipid peroxidation (TBARS), total protein content and antioxidative enzymatic system and cellular architecture of kidney tissue comparable to the control group of rats. It may therefore be suggested that insulin plant extract as herbal therapy can be used during diabetes as a nephroprotective drug to avoid the kidney function associated disorder because it has similar protective effect as that of exogenous melatonin.
