Sexual Dysfunction Among Male Schizophrenics: A Comparison Between Psychotropic Medicines Treated and Treatment Naïve Patients

Abstract

Introduction: The prevalence of sexual dysfunction (SD) is higher in persons with mental disorders, particularly those treated with psychotropic medication. There are very few studies, especially in the Indian population, addressing the frequency of SD due to psychotropic medications. SD in schizophrenia may be a consequence of many factors; the condition itself, its socioeconomic impact and its treatment. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the psychiatric unit of a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital in North India. A total 130 schizophrenic male patients with ICD-10 diagnosis (psychotropic treated n=82 and Treatment naïve n=48) were assessed for SD by using Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) done in these patients. Results: In the present study prevalence of SD among psychotropic treated group was found to be 51.2% on ASEX and 84.1% on IIEF. While in treatment naïve group SD was found to be 29.2% on ASEX and 66.6% on IIEF. Conclusion: SD is more common in patients taking psychotropic drugs. Thus it is important for all healthcare professionals to acknowledge and encourage discussion as routine enquiry as well as the impact of drugs on sexual function prior to the prescription of antipsychotics and on follow-up. More attention is warranted in this area as it may provide opportunities for improved quality of life and adherence to treatment for patients.
