Phyto-chemical Screening, In Vitro Anti-arthritic Study, Formulation and Evaluation of Ethanolic Extract of Helicteres Isora Fruits
Abstract
The present investigation was aimed at exploring the anti-arthritic activity of ethanolic extract of Helicteres isora fruits, using Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and Egg albumin denaturation method. The extract was subjected to preliminary phyto-chemical screening in order to find out the major phyto-constituents present in it. Various concentrations of the extract (100, 250, and 1000 μg/ml) were prepared and the percentage inhibition of protein denaturation was determined. Diclofenac sodium (100, 250, and 1000 μg/ml) was used as the reference standard. A gel was formulated using the extract which was then evaluated. The result of the present study indicates that the extract showed the presence of various phyto-constituents such as alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides etc. and exhibited significant anti-arthritic activity. The higher concentration of extract was found to possess better anti-arthritic activity as compared to the extract at a lower concentration. The anti-arthritic activity of the extract was comparable with that of the activity possessed by the standard drug Diclofenac sodium. The evaluation result substantiated the gel to possess good spreadability, extrudability and was within an acceptable PH range.
