Evaluation of Anthelmintic, Analgesic and Neuropharmacological Activity of Merremia hederacea
Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the phytochemical screening, anthelmintic activity, analgesic properties and neuropharmacological activity of the leaf extract of Merremia hederacea (Family: Convovulaceae). After preliminary phytochemical screening, the leaf extract of Merremia hederacea contain flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids and reducing sugars. Anthelmintic activity test was done by comparing the time of paralysis and the time of death of earthworms Pheretima posthuma compared with the standard drug, Albendazole. The minimum to maximum time of paralysis and death of Albendazole observed at the concentration of 25, 50, 100 mg/ml was 3 min 6 sec to 10 min 23 sec and that for the fresh leaf juice was 45 min 52 sec to 48 min 32 sec, respectively. From experimental data, the fresh juice of the leaf of Merremia hederacea showed mild anthelmintic activity. The analgesic potential of the leaf extract was evaluated using acetic acid-induced writhing, tail immersion and hot plate tests in Swiss albino mice at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight. The results of tail immersion and hot plate test showed potential analgesic activity of the extract, which is comparable to the standard drug, Diclofenac-Na (10 mg/kg). The neuropharmacological activity in open field and hole cross was not significant enough. Thus, the results of the present study suggested that the extract possesses significant analgesic activity in mice.
