Abstract

Abstract

Background: Iron is the most commonly used metal for human welfare on earth and also a vital element for sustenance of life.Iron deficiency is a common affliction of human beings all over the globe and presents as iron deficiency anaemia. Most effective and preferred treatment of iron deficiency is replenishment of iron by oral administration. Successful completion of treatment depends on tolerance of the prescribed drug by a patient. Oral administration of iron is notorious for gastrointestinal intolerance which ranges from minor complaints like nausea, vomiting, constipation, gastric discomfort, or pain due to minor mucosal erosions or frank ulcerations. Aim of the study: Sharbat Faulad is the drug of choice used in the Unani system of medicine for oral replenishment of iron. To study the gastrointestinal tolerance and its therapeutic suitability, gastric irritation inducing effect of Sharbat Faulad manufactured by three different leading Unani pharmaceutical companies in India was conducted on albino rats. Methodology: The study was conducted by Thuillier’s method. The animals were divided into 04 groups. Group I was administered Sharbat Faulad of Hamdard Laboratories, Delhi. Group II was given Sharbat Faulad of Rex Remedies, Delhi. Group III received Sharbat Faulad of Dawakhana Tibbiya College, AMU Aligarh. Group IV served as blank control and received 5ml distilled water. This treatment continued for 14 days and on the 15th day all animals of the test and control groups were sacrificed. The abdomen was opened to remove the stomachs for observation under high magnification. Results: The results revealed that no abnormal changes like congestion, effusion, erosion, etc. was seen in the stomachs of the animals. Conclusion: The preparations are safe with respect to gastric irritation-inducing liability as the ulcerogenic index calculated in animals was zero.
