Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Pedalium Murex Leaves in Rats

Herbal drugs are being proved as effective as synthetic drugs with lesser side effects. Herbal medicines are in line with nature, with less hazardous reactions. Pedalium murexis traditionally used for the treatment of puerperal diseases, digestive tonics, ulcers, fevers, wounds and general debility. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the phytochemical and anti-inflammatory activities of methanolic extract of leaves of Pedalium murex Linn (Pedaliaceae) in rats. The leaves of Pedalium murex (L.) in methanol extract showed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, steroids, resins, saponins and proteins. The result of the anti-inflammatory effect of the methanolic extract of Pedalium murex (L.) (MEPM) on carrageenan-induced edema was a gradual increase in edema paw volume of rats in the control. The maximum inhibition of 19.43 and 29.68% in MEPM at the dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg respectively, showed after 3 h of treatment in carrageenan induced paw edema, whereas the standard drug indomethacin at the dose of 10 mg/kg showed 40.72% of inhibition. In dextran induced paw edema, MEPM at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg showed significant inhibition of 14.73 and 29.79%. Indomethacin showed 40.00% From the present study, it can be concluded that MEPMhas potential dose-dependent and anti-inflammatory effect and gives a solid scientific approach to the traditional uses of the plant Pedalium murex.
