An Overview: Therapeutic Application of Plant Ocimum Sanctum

Abstract

The Ocimum sanctum are used for curing various diseases. In traditional system, whole plant of Ocimum sanctum Linn. has been recommended for the treatment of many diseases like skin disease, malaria, diarrhea, dysentery, arthritis, bronchitis, eye diseases, insect bites etc. as well as O. sanctum L. possess anti-fertility, anticancer, antidiabetic, antifungal, antimicrobial, cardioprotective, analgesic, antispasmodic and adaptogenic actions. In O. sanctum L. Eugenol (1-hydroxy-2-methoxy-4-allylbenzene) has been found which is a very active constituent and has therapeutic potentials. The studies reported in the present review confirm the therapeutic value of O. sanctum L. and support the use of this plant for human and animal disease therapy.
