Abstract

Tulasi (Ocimum sanctum Linn. belonging family Lamiaceae) is described as a sacred and useful medicinal plant in ancient literature. It is derived from ‘Sanskrit,’ which means "the incomparable one. Tulasi leaves have Katu- Kashaya Rasa, as well as Laghu, Ruksha and Tikshna Guna and Ushna Virya. It has proven pharmacological actions such as antioxidant, immune-modulatory, antipyretic, anticancer, chemo-preventive, radio-protective, anti-hypertensive, cardio protective, antimicrobial activity and many more. The present article attempts to collect all necessary information regarding Derivation, Vernacular names, Paryaya, Vargikarana, Rasa Panchaka, Varieties, Karma and Formulations from Samhita and Nighantu. Also Taxonomical position, Pharmacognostical evaluation and pharmacological activities of this plant have also been reviewed from various scientific research articles. The leaf of OS contains 0.7% volatile oil comprising about 71% eugenol and 20% methyl eugenol.
