Phytochemical Screening and Nephroprotective Activity of Citrus maximus

Abstract

Several plants with medicinal properties are used to treat diseases. Many people rely on traditional medicines, chiefly plant-based, for their major health care needs. The wide biological and medicinal properties, higher safety margins and affordability, make plant based medicines attractive for use in developing countries for primary health care. Citrus maxima belong to the family of Rutaceae; the phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, terpenoids, sterols, flavonoids and carbohydrates. But it does not contain tannins. It was ascertained that treatment with gentamicin elicited a big elevation in the levels of blood serum, urea, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, serum urea and weight of kidney. However, daily treatment with Citrus maximus for 8days presented nephroprotection on gentamicin elicited rats in an exceedingly dose-dependent fashion offered the most protection.
