Abstract

Inspiration from the anti-infective excellence (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-malarial) of Schiff’s base molecules as well as knowing the rising importance of low-molecular-weight ligands (LMWL), the present research involved the development of novel Schiff’s base compound utilizing very basic laboratory components; 1-phenylthiourea and benzoin using the conventional synthesis technique. The compounds were comprehensively characterized through sophisticated instruments and further screened for anti-microbial activity against pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli, MTCC 2961) strain. The novel compound expressed fairly good anti-E. coli activity (ZOI = 21.4 mm, MIC = 25 μg/mL) as compared to ciprofloxacin (ZOI = 32.1 mm, MIC = 6.25 μg/mL), the standard drug. However, no structure-activity-relationships (SARs) can be deduced from these data and more investigation of this compound against several other microbial species and further pre-clinical studies on in vivo model studies are essentially required in the near future. This study will definitely open newer perspectives and therapeutic avenues towards the fabrication of potentially high anti-microbial agents against several resistant pathogenic species.
