Design and Evaluation of Itraconazole Niosomes

Panner Selvam R, Jaidul Islam, Vineeth Chandy

Abstract

The present study was undertaken with an aim to fabricate and characterize and evaluate niosomes of Itraconazole, where the drug is released in a sustained manner for a period of 12 hours. Itraconazole is Class-2 drug having low solubility and have short half-life between 3–4 hours. Due to high first pass metabolism, the drug is rapidly excreted from the body indicating the need of sustained release delivery. To overcome these limitations, Itraconazole was incorporated in niosomes. Two different non-ionic surfactants namely Span 60 and Span 40 were used in different combinations at different ratios for the preparation of niosomes. The niosomes were prepared using Ether Injection method and they were evaluated for morphology, percentage practical yield, percentage entrapment efficiency and in vitro release study. The FTIR studies rules out the incompatibility between drug and excipients. Formulation F1 with non-ionic surfactant span-60 & 40 in the ratio 1:2 was found to be optimized formulation based on evaluation parameters.
