Abstract

Background: Saviryata Avadhi of different Ayurvedic dosage forms is described in various Ayurvedic treatises after 12th century. Though the concepts have strong background, it is needed to re-validate the age old concepts by following contemporary standards. Jivantyadi Yamaka is a polyherbal medicated Sneha (Ghrita and Taila) used externally for curing Vipadika and other skin disorders. However, till date stability study of Jivantyadi Yamaka and its developed dosage form Jivantyadi Malahara has not carried out. So the present study was aimed to evaluate the shelf life of Jivantyadi Yamaka and Jivantyadi Malahara through accelerated stability study as per ICH guideline Q1A. Materials and Methods: Samples of Jivantyadi Yamaka and Jivantyadi Malahara were prepared as per reference of Bheshaja samhita. To evaluate shelf life of Jivantyadi Yamaka and Jivantyadi Malahara, accelerated stability study was conducted as per ICH guidelines. Jivantyadi Yamaka and Jivantyadi Malahara were stored at 402°C temperature, while the relative humidity was 755% at the interval of 0, 1, 3 and 6 months. The results of several physico-chemical parameters were taken into consideration to estimate intercept and slope. Results: The study shows that there were no substantial changes observed in organoleptic parameters. But in physico-chemical parameters like iodine value, acid value and saponification value, viscosity value shows changes at 6 months at accelerated condition. The microbial load was found within the permissible limits in both of the samples. Conclusion: Shelf life of Jivantyadi Yamaka is 3.5 years and Jivantyadi Malahara is 2.1 years for countries which come under climate zone III and IV, which is extrapolated based on data of accelerated stability study
