A Factorial Study on the Evaluation of the Effects of Starch, PVP and PEG 6000 on the Dissolution Rate of Pioglitazone Solid Dispersions

Abstract

Pioglitazone, a relatively new oral anti-diabetic drug belongs to BCS class II with low solubility and high permeability, and as such exhibits low and variable oral bioavailability. It needs enhancement in solubility and dissolution rate for improving its oral bioavailability and consequent reduction in dose. The specific objectives of the study are 1. To evaluate starch as a carrier for enhancing the dissolution rate of pioglitazone, a BCS class II drug. 2. To evaluate the individual and the combined effects of starch, PVP and PEG 6000.
