Abstract

Nanoparticles have greater research horizon and smaller size ranging from 1 to 1000 nm. This is very small as compared to other particles. As their size is extremely small, so ultimately their route of administration and reaching to site of action becomes more convenient. These nano-scale particles can easily pass out the cell membrane such as blood brain-barriers. Nanoparticles are synthesized from various metals, polymers, microbes and even from plant materials. In this review, we have taken an overview of nanoparticles and their classification, method of preparation, advantages, applications and factors affecting nanoparticles. However, herbal nanoparticles are also synthesised on large scale. These nanoparticles have different sizes and shapes with various dimensions such as spheres, cylinders, cubes, triangles, rings, or disks. Organic nanoparticles, non-organic nanoparticles and carbon-based nanoparticles are general types of nanoparticles. Various methods of preparation of nanoparticles have been employed in research such as hot homogenization, cold homogenization, supercritical fluid technology, solvent evaporation etc. The factors affecting pharmacological action of nanoparticles such as particle size, particle size distribution, zeta potential and surface properties have also been discussed. As we know that most of drugs and their analogues belong to natural origin. The herbal medicines and natural products are used to cure and treat diseases from ancient times, so we have discussed some of the herbal nanoparticles. Overall we can conclude that the herbal nanoparticles have great scope and potential in targeted drug delivery system.
