Effect of Starch CMC Blend on the Drug Release from the Tablet

Abstract

Starch is frequently used as a binder and disintegrate for immediate release tablet formulation and is also used to prepare sustained release formulations. Starches from various sources show different functional characteristics; while combining with other excipients. When starch blend from various sources is used in the combination with carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC), it shows different release properties. The aim of the present work is to investigate the influence of starch-CMC blend properties on the drug release rate of paracetamol. The paracetamol tablets are prepared by wet granulation methods using paracetamol: starch: CMC ratio (3:1:1). The tablets are evaluated for hardness, friability, disintegration and dissolution. The USP type II dissolution testing apparatus is used to study the process of drug dissolution. Dissolution profile of paracetamol mixed with different ratios of starch and salt of CMC showed sustained release properties while compared with tablet prepared with simple starch blends. The drug release data of different formulation is fitted with different mathematical model to study the release kinetics and followed mixed order kinetics.
