Formulation and Characterization of Mesoporous Nanoparticulate Drug Delivery Platform

The aim of this study was to synthesize and characterize mesoporous silica nanoparticles, namely, SBA-15 (Santa Barbara Amorphous) and MCM-41 (Mobile Crystalline Material) as a drug delivery platform. These MSNs have been synthesized using triblock copolymer F 127, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a co-surfactant and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as a silica precursor. The synthesized MSNs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), particle size and surface area analysis (BET analysis), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in vitro dissolution test, and solubility study. The loading efficiency was assessed by incorporating the DCN (Diacerein) via passive loading and it was estimated to be 28%. Synthesized MSN, i.e., SBA-15 and MCM-41 were mean particle sizes of 650 and 450 nm and specific area 1111.44 and 250.20, respectively. The result reveals synthesized MSN with small particle size and high surface area. The drug release will help in the design of drug delivery system for the dissolution enhancement of water-insoluble drugs.
