Hypothesis of Development of Sukshma Basti: An Outpatient-Based Emergency Ayurvedic Management Procedure

Basti is an important Panchakarma procedure employed chiefly for the management of neurological, and neuromuscular disease. The procedure is considered as half treatment as it may be used in almost all type of diseases. This is useful as radical management, and in the present era it is used as indoor planned procedure. In today’s era emergency management is key and most vital—Basti is a very useful tool for emergency management in Ayurveda. It acts as prompt, safe and effective management procedure because of its holistic approach. Thus there is a need to develop a procedure which may be carried out as outpatient procedure or ward procedure or self-procedure without much pre- and postprocedure requisite. Basti is administered through rectal route, retention enema or drugs administered as Basti are absorbed through the gut and act systematically, thus heals or controls systemic illness. Basti is described as emergency management in ulcerative colitis, retention of urine, flatus, faeces, blood loss, etc. On the basis of classical description, a modified procedure is framed which is done by using catheter and syringe. 10 mL of Basti Dravya (mainly oil) is used. Details of the procedure and its merits are described in the paper.
